Eigher’s essay can be broken into three pats. The introduction, the body and the closing. Each of these serves a different purpose in the piece. In the introduction he discusses what dumpster diving is and how to do it safely and efficiently. He lets the reader in on what he takes and how to decide if it is worth it. This part serves to warm the reader up to the idea of dumpster diving and teach them that its not just for rats. The body is the indepth analysis, it is important here for the reader to have an open mind because this is where he talks about some of the downfalls of dumpster diving. Also he talks about the types of things one would find in a garbage can. The end talks about the different kinds of dumpsters and the different kinds of divers. This is important to the proecss analysis because it helps earn back respect for the people who dumpster dive, and the people who put there trash out.

HOW TO:

Shopping is very important to my livelyhood. Even though I am jobless I have found that without money you can still shop. When you do have money though, here are some ways to make sure you get your money’s worth.

First off, do your research. You should know your style better than anyone but to make sure you are current, look through magazines for outfits that you think fit your personality and also you think you can pull off.  Also, google your favorite celebrity icon and look through pictures of oufits they have worn. This is a good idea because celebrities have sylists pick out outfitts for them and by taking thier ideas you are basically getting free styling.

Now, once you are ready to go shopping make sure you are well prepared. Pare down your purse to money and water. Always bring water to hydrate yourself through all the walking, and the lighter purse to keep yourself from collapsing under any added weight of your purchases. Your clothes should also be picked strategically. The ideal outfitt would be a wrap dress, leggings, and tank top, and comfortable flats. This is ideal because of the easy changing factor and also your ability to get undressed in public to try something on at say a crazy sample sale.

Before you go you should have an idea of what your looking for. Once you get to the store study what is upfront. This will usually be the most expensive items as well as current colors and textures. Before grabbing anything, however, high tail it to the back of the store. This is where the best prices will be found. Now by picking from these will not only save you money but also time, becasue they are usually sorted by size so that you are able to look through what is available without searching for sizes. Now I would also caution  you to to beware of rash purchases. I myself have been victim to this problem. Just becaus it is 50% off does not mean that you should get it. Keep in mind what you have studied and make sure that any purchases fall under the umbrella of your prejudged needs. Good buys are always basic tank tops, plain shirts and classic casual jeans.

After tackling the sales rack move forward skipping the accessories (you will come back to these). Once you have what you want to try on get a fitting room and sort the clothes. sort them into potential outfits and try them on. Don’t be afriad to ask for a different size or opinion, the sales staff is there to help you and will almost always tell the truth and offer advice. Also. if you like thier style ask them about how they put thier outfitts together. Now once you have decided what you will be puchaseing, you will need to decid eif you need accessories. Accessories are meant to help your style not trash it. Usually minimalistic is the way to go. For casual events keep to one piece of jewlery and on more special occasions two or three are fine.

Woo! you are done go home and figure your new puchases into your existing clothing. By interchanging clothes you will help the longevity off your clothing.

In her essay naps Barbra Holland raises many points that make her arfguement quite strong. She starts with an anecdote from her travel to France. She expeiernced first hand the role napping has on the culture. Following that she talks about heow all over the worl people nap regularly. Then she talks about how the nap has its role in the workplace. In this portion she mentions the use of naps in Japanese workplaces.

Her arguement is structured to have a “for” arguement then a counter arguement. I think she could have put all the counter arguements at the end instead of throughout tho help the reader form and opinion.

I agree with her that naps would be beneficial. I know for me that sleeping gives me much needed energy. For example, when I am at volleyball tournaments we are forced to wake up at as early a four in the morning and by sleeping inbetween games I refresh myself and have more energy.

2. In this cartoon thw humans are depicted as villians or evil scientists at first. At the end however they are dinner!

4. Frames 1 and 4 show the progression of what we are doin to our food and how someday it might become us. This is done using parallelism that add humor to the comic.

5. The cartoonist is being ironic. Whithout the pictures it would seem serious but the picture shows the people being served to the customers on a platter.

6. The tone is very harsh and a little crazy but when it is paired with the frams it is more sarcastic but still gets a point across.

The Angel Resides in the South

In response to the prompt about the “Angel in the House”, I believe that she still lives but has been rejected as a whole by the modern woman. Due to the many feminist movements throughout the past decades many woman have demanded the right to be free of their Victorian counterpart, I believe the “angel” began her descent around the time women fought for the right to vote.

When this famous movement began women began to shirk their old roles and developed new ones. This newly found freedom led to other movements including that of the 70’s and today’s abortion controversies. In the 70’s women wanted equal status as men in the workplace. This much deserved position is mostly recognized in America, with the few exceptions, such as the south.

I mention the south mainly because when I think of the south I think of a southern belle. Southern belle’s are known for their charm and obedience to men. They also are known for being interesting in men for their status and money, not their face or personality. In the south the Victorian woman is instilled din young girls from birth, and it is obvious that they stand (or crumble) for everything the angel in the house requires.

1. I think life changing events would startle me. Things such as cloning and maybe the end of the world if I believed it.

2. This is reciprocal because the museum and the zoo help eachother out. Similarly is when a person buys clothing from a store, the store receives income and the person has something to wear.

3. I would not think about that in a good way. I think I would be very scared. I believe that Eisley would be angry that the nest was taken apart but glad it was replaced.

4. Paragraph 8 is an example of an epiphany. It describes his feeling for nature when he realizes that nature can be very serene and technology can not replace that feeling.

5. I think the 1st or 3rd paragraph would have worked, but I liked the 3rd paragraph better.

6. I think he explains that all of these things have their place in the world and when used properly can work for good.

Corn Pone Opinions

1. Twain’s purpose is to analyze the reason why people do things.

2. He starts with a personal experience and broadens it out to apply to everyone. When he broadens it he changes his personal pronoun to we to involve the audience in his analysis.

3. The anecdote serves to introduce and explain the uncommon idea that he is going to talk about.

4. Twain expands Jerry’s definition by examining what self-approval is and how these opinions get started. When he numbers them he gives his reader background on what he is going to write about because it can be a confusing subject.

5. I believe that at the time Twain’s examples such as the hoopskirts, wineglasses, and bloomers, were more effective but as a more disconnected era now it is not as effective but still fairly effective.

6. I think the irony is in that he is talking about conformity pertaining to a black man who is a slave. This man is following his party yet understands why.

7. I believe that paragraph 13 is so long because it is one idea and thought process. I think he could have broken it up at the part where he talks about conformity but it serves well to leave it long.

8. The two sentences provide the parallelism that defines who the men she is talking about are and why they do what they do.

9. By capitalizing them it draws attention to them and adds to the sentence.

Discussion Question #3

I believe that she is using this statement to make the point that writers have to free their minds when writing. A writer that is tied down by cultural and familiar standards is not free to produce great writing. If you look at some of the best books they often hit on touchy subjects parents and administrators would not like us to read about. One such book is Lovely Bones. This is a book that most students have read is very engaging but if it where up to others I believe we would not be able to read books like this.

Rhetoric and Style Questions #4 and #9

4. I think she was referring to her duties as a “Victorian Woman”. She felt that she needed to keep house and attempt perfection to please others when she would much rather immerse herself in great writing.

9. She was very surprised when a piece of work she had mailed yielded her “one pound ten and six”. After which she started and drown herself in the work but she also felt drawn to her womanly duties. Then she proceeded to kill “The Angel in the House”. This experience brought her more creative experiences to draw from.

Assertions on the Omnipresent Box

In his statement on Television taken from, “The Argument Against Television” Trueby takes a negative but questioning tone. He does express his distaste for television, but also leads his reader to ask themselves the question of whether the television has as strong a hold on their life and the statement suggests it does. After evaluating this my self I have formes my opinion on his statement.

The statement by Trueby is mostly true. Some people today spend too much time watching TV. In the sentence he uses the word omnipotent. This means ever-present, in some ways televisions are always there. They are found in our bedrooms in our dr. offices, in our cars and in our gyms.

But what the author forgets is the is peoples right to turn off the TV. Adults are informed enough to know what they are watching and how much is too much. If they pass a healthy limit it is their choice to do so. Children on the other hand are not as qualified to make their own decisions. This is why parents should monitor and guide their children through what are appropriate watching habits. If children are not taught this they can grow up in a world revolving around television, much as what we are experiencing today.

What Trueby also fails to realize is the value of the TV media. Television is a huge industry creating thousands of jobs for Americans. This does not excuse the violence and other inappropriate subjects found on television but it does help the economy. The amount money made through television is staggering.

I agree with the tone Trubey takes in his quote. That television is something Americans should be skeptical of. Although we all enjoy turning off our brains for and hour of so after a hard days work, the question is how could our time be better spent.
