In Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad there are 2 women present. The first women mentioned is Kurtz’s “intended” who is living in England. The other woman is a native woman who is present when the steamer takes off for the return trip. There is speculation that the native woman is Kurtz’s lover in Africa. This is because of her actions as Kurtz takes off on the steamer leaving his post. The woman walks up the shore and raises her arms. Also, the woman is ornamentally dressed with much jewelry and fine bracelets, unlike the other natives.

            When it comes to similarities the two women have many. The first is their love for Kurtz. They not only are both in love with him but neither of them truly know him. Also, they are both deeply connected with the culture and customs of the countries they belong to. Thirdly, both the intended and the native woman are used as symbolism. The two of them represent a duality between Africa and Europe.

            Along with this duality comes many differences; just as Europe and Africa are two very different places. The most apparent differences is how each woman’s chapter in the book ends. The native woman loses her life at the hand of the white pilgrims. The intended on the other hand is spared more heartbreak by Marlow when he tells her that Kurtz’s last words where her name. Both women loved Kurtz the same but because the native woman was different from Conrad’s traditional views she was shot by the ship’s ignorant crew.

            Throughout the book the attitude towards woman is very east to understand. Women are to props to society and treated like things. Men believe that the women should be spare from reality as we find in Marlow’s meeting with the intended. Another attitude expressed is that native women are not the same as English women, even though the only difference is in their skin tone. Finally, throughout this book it is easy to see that Marlow was a racist and misogynistic. The way he treats both the natives and the women he encounters shows that he is maybe more in tune than the others around him but he still has these tendencies.

Merriam Webster’s dictionary defines plagiarism as:

 

Transitive verb: to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one’s own : use (another’s production) without crediting the source

Intransitive verb: to commit literary theft: present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source

 

            Plagiarism is a serious offense that can lead to intense punishments if committed. Plagiarism is against U.S. law and is a determent to everyone in the literary community. Plagiarizing is taking another persons work without their permission and or without citing them as the author. On plagiarism.org it talks about some of the punishments of plagiarizing, it says, “As with any wrongdoing, the degree of intent (see below) and the nature of the offense determine its status. When plagiarism takes place in an academic setting, it is most often handled by the individual instructors and the academic institution involved. If, however, the plagiarism involves money, prizes, or job placement, it constitutes a crime punishable in court”. Plagiarism is a bad idea. It is unfair to others and doesn’t allow you to progress individually.

A technical definition for binge drinking states that for women binge drinking is consuming four or more drinks in one sitting and for men it is consuming five or more drinks in one sitting. When twenty college freshmen were asked how many drinks they regularly consume in one sitting they answered with a whopping 7.7 drinks. (Pawelka p.3) In fact, the number of students that binge is highest in the 18 to 20 age group. (CDC) The problem with this is that those students aren’t even of the legal drinking age. The students who are consuming the most alcohol are doing it illegally. There are a few things that have shown to prevent binge drinking, they are, “Increasing alcoholic beverage costs and excise taxes, limiting the number of retail alcohol outlets… in a given area, consistent enforcement of laws against underage drinking and alcohol impaired driving, screening and counseling for alcohol misuse.” (CDC) Joseph A. Califano Jr. Said in a press release, “It’s time to get the ‘high’ out of higher education. Under any circumstances acceptance by administrators, trustees, professors and parents of this college culture of alcohol and other drug abuse is inexcusable. In this world of fierce global competition, we are losing thousands of our nation’s best and brightest to alcohol and drugs, and in the process robbing them and our nation of their promising futures.” (CDC) Binge drinking is simply too dangerous, many think that is harmless but it has many negative affects that change people’s lives forever.

What is binge drinking and what effects does it have on college students?

 

            The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention defines binge drinking as, “a common pattern alcohol use” (CDC para. 1). College students binge drink for many reasons but the reason set aside, binge drinking is a dangerous activity that has multiple short and long term as well as social effects. While many students may think that they are participating in some harmless fun with friends, they are killing their brains and reducing its capacity.

            Some people may be surprised to know that in the past fifteen years the number of college students who binge drink has stayed about the same, but the reason for more concern is the sharp spike in illegal drug use (?). Drug use and alcoholism go hand in hand. Alcoholics use the drugs as morning after pick-me ups and to recover from hangovers. Drug addicts use alcohol to wind down and fall asleep. This mixing of drugs is extremely dangerous and can be lethal.

Bias Post

As we have looked at bias this past week I have noticed some interesting things. First off, I realized how much a person’s cultural eye affects the bias that is present in their writing. The piece that represented this the most was Mc Guffey stories. As we discussed, the views of this author are an old fashioned Christian view particularly Protestant. This bias is shown clearly in the end of “The Maniac”. The author lectures the reader on the blessings that come from keeping the Sabbath day holy. This bias so blatantly presented makes the text seem likely to be found in a Sunday school or a child’s book set on Christian values. Another story talked about a tax collector that was thrown in prison and went mad over a simple number mistake. The morale of the story was to not get caught up in worldly things and to focus on your reward in heaven. The end of the story emphasized decent people and their worthiness over indecent people. I believe it used the word “decent” upward of six times. This repeated emphasis on “good” and “decent” people was clearly evident in the authors bias.

Chapter 25

This chapter is written more from the perspective of the district commissioner. The DC and his guards travel to Okonkwo’s hut after he has murdered the messenger. When The DC arrives there he finds Obierika and other elders from the village. When he asks where Oknonwo is he threatens to take the men to jail if they don’t deliver Okonkwo. The men lead them to where Ononkwo hung himself. From here the DC considers his options for including Okonkwo in a book he is writing of a history of Africa. The question is whether to devote a paragraph or a chapter to his. This is insulting to the reader. We have just spent an entire book learing about Okonkwo and coming to understand and respect this charecter, and now this white man wants to cast him off as nothing but a talking point and an animal. The DC’s book is to be a history but the way he writes it will not be a true history but an obscenely bias one.

Chapter 19

In this chapter Okonkwo is preparing to return to Umofia from Mbanta after his seven years of exile is up. As he finishes up his last harvest he tells his wives to prepare a feast for the  people of his motherland to thank them for thier hopitality. Ekwefi is put in charge of the cassava and Okonkwo will prepare the meat and yams. The other women will prepare various other things. At the feast the kola nut ceremonie was performed and Okonkwo thanked the people for thier hospitality. Then an old man rose to honor Okonkwo with a speech.

The last speech given seems very omonous, is the old man’s forshadowing something in Umofia?

Why do Ekwefi and Okonkwo fight over the number of goats?

The woman’s suffragist movement is an important event in the history of politics. When women fought for the right to vote they were able to come together, black and white, as well as poor and rich. Historian Victoria Bissell Brown said it best when she said, “We tend to think of suffrage as an “on-off” switch. Women didn’t have the vote, then women did have the vote in 1920. The story is quite different.”(PBS para. 1)

 

I really liked this quote from Victoria Bissell Brown. I found it in one of my sources and decided to end my paper with it. Before I wrote this research paper this idea was true to me. Obviously I knew that women fought for the right to vote but I didn’t realize how long it actually took, or how much theses women gave up and suffered for thier right. The one thing i found most interesting was the stories. Also, the number of remarkable women tht fought like Susan B. Anthony. She was a great leader in the movement.
